Fallen Angel 2: Dawn of Reckoning – Excerpt

Lucifer stood in the streets of Babylon, watching as the disappearance of monsters resulted in swarming terrified people. All around they ran and scampered, tripping and colliding to escape the hungry fangs that sought to devour them.

As if on quickened time, the events rushed forward. Bodies lay twitching in the streets, their necks pulsing out red puddles.

The sight almost made Lucifer want to call back the hungry monsters that he and the king had led down here. It had taken moments to create more of what he had turned the king into. Yet it seemed their hunger was insatiable. None of these empty shells that had once contained human souls would come back to life. Lucifer had not infected them. He had not even had the chance to. His monsters’ hunger came first, and that understanding made one thing clear. Despite this new power he contained with his blood, he still was not in control. The lives lost were not deserved, but they were not his to refuse either.

When they finally reached the temple, the sounds of frantic prayer were like whispers that blanketed the death at his back. The changed soldiers’ numbers were not so great, but their hunger for blood had caused havoc. Now he had the men he sought to ruin, men of worship, prayer, and devotion. All huddled inside, begging to be heard, begging their maker to save them.

“Fools.”

Like him, they would never be heard. And like him, their delivery from sin was out of their reach. Lucifer would make sure of that. For these mortals would not die today. No. They would live…as the monster he had been condemned to become. As a being worthy of judgment before their almighty God.

Love was Lucifer’s sin. Death and destruction would be theirs.

Lucifer was ready to prove which was worse, and which truly required condemnation.

Surrounded by the soldiers he had already turned, he watched as Cyrus stalked up the steps to the temple. He made not a single move to order the next attack, and none was needed as a deathly silence fell over them all.

Fangs bared, King Cyrus’s eyes gleamed with promise. “You have your orders. Follow them and your spot on my army is secure. Fail me, and you become the prey.” Clutching the large pulls, he tugged the double doors open.

The soldiers reacted at once, racing up the steps and pouring inside the temple. Screams and shrieks split the silence, stalling Lucifer from following the anarchy that awaited him.

And then he heard something, almost too quiet to make out and yet distinct enough to stop him in his tracks. “Lucifer, please. Please. This is not who you are. This is not what you want. Their deaths hurt you once. They affected you enough to challenge God. You advocated for them. You tried to save them. Stop this, please. Be the man I know you to be.”

Lucifer turned his head to the side, closing his eyes at the barely audible voice that had drifted by him as if on the wind. He knew it was Gabriel. There was no denying it. And so much of what she had said was the truth. If he was being honest with himself, he knew their deaths still affected him. Though not because their lives were being taken. No. What really affected him was the fact that once they gasped their last breath, if they were worthy, they would be enveloped into the infinite light above, welcomed into the home that had been taken from him. He chuckled without mirth at her last few words. Be the man I know you to be. Because that was all he was anymore, a man, not an angelic being. Not an archangel. Merely a man, yet one who would never be granted the redemption he had strived so hard to achieve for a millennium.

The redemption he still secretly craved.

Shaking off the stirring of emotion that threatened to make him reconsider, Lucifer strode onward. Even if he wanted to put an end to this anarchy, which he did not, it would not stop. The only lives that could be saved were the ones waiting for his infection—which, if he did not act soon would fall victim to the hungry monsters that held the men up by their throats inside. Women and a few extra men were huddled within the four walls among shattered statues and upturned seating benches. But there was only one exit, and it was blocked from all sides. None of them would ever make it out alive…unless he did as planned.

Crossing the threshold, Lucifer turned away from the cries and shrieks and paused. Hands on the open doors he hung his head. A part of him wanted to relent, to end all of this before it could go too far. The other part knew there was no point. Stopping all he had started would change nothing. He would still be condemned and banished. He would still be alone. And God’s humans would still be free.

Under his breath, his words killed any niggling hesitation and reignited ire in his veins. “Why do you suddenly care? All these years—you abandoned me too.”

And then he slammed the doors shut.

“The memory of your taste…” Hunger pulsed in his silver-blue stare as his gaze fell to her lips. “I cannot forget it. You are the light, and I am a moth to your flame. I cannot turn away. I will not. I cannot stop what we have already begun, not unless you tell me to.”

Fallen Angel 1: Ashes of Eden Excerpt

“You are sad. Why do you cry?”

Lucifer’s warm hand touched Gabriel’s cheek, sending a wave of heat through her as she turned to face him. Instead of moving away as he had above, he let his hand fall against her neck below her thick hair. His breath was faster as he stared at her, speeding up as her own did. Sensation flooded her like God’s rains one day soon would, and she struggled to speak past the knot wedged in her throat. “I feel so…deeply. I weep for all that will die, for being the one to beg Him to deliver the world from sin.”

Lucifer stepped closer, his hand on her neck curling further around her nape. “His machinations are his own. Nothing you ever say or did say has changed His plan. You know we do not have that power. We never have and we never will. What we want is not part of His plan.”

“Lucifer…”As Gabriel stared into the deep pools of his silvery eyes, she knew there was so much he was holding back, that he was holding deep down inside. His grip on her neck had tightened too, and his body had started to quiver. The sharpness of his voice scared her, but it was also a clue. Despite the flutter of fearful anticipation that swirled through her belly, she needed to know… “What is it that you want?”

Lucifer’s gaze fell to her lips, and she gasped at the warmth that suddenly swelled inside of her. He was beautiful, stunning in every way inside and out. He could not possibly want what Michael had claimed, what Lucifer had all but confessed to. Not after all this time. Not from her. But Gabriel was lying to herself. The truth was as clear as the strengthening moon as he kept staring, licking his lips as if starved.

Gabriel knew she should pull away or take a step back from him. She had seen that look on Lucifer’s face before when she had not known the cause—the wanting, the heated yearning. The time they had stared through that tranquil pool to the Garden of Eden and witnessed the mortal love between a man and a woman. Lucifer wanted her. He craved her. Michael had claimed as much. And now she saw the proof in his eyes and the way they drank her in. In the way his breath quickened as she bit her bottom lip, pumping his chest beneath his robe. In the tensing of his sculpted arms and the way his free hand curled then uncurled over and over.

Did she want him too?

Without thinking, without giving herself permission, Gabriel leaned closer. Now she felt his warm breath across her face and tasted the masculine scent of him on her tongue.

At her hitched breath, Lucifer hissed, gnashing his teeth together as if trying to distract himself. As he went to pull away, a pang of unexpected loss cut through her. “Gabriel, we should…leave.”

As Lucifer’s possessive grip on her neck relinquished, one rough finger wiping her drying tears as he turned away, she could not stop the words. “Lucifer, stay—”

A flare of light brightened the darkening sky, and Lucifer spun back, reclaiming the back of her neck. The look in his eyes was so intense she could almost imagine they were on fire. Lips a hair’s breadth away, she didn’t pull back as he froze before her. He seemed to be waiting for her to move, to push him away, to tell him to stop. But she didn’t. She couldn’t speak. And more than that? She didn’t want to. Instead, she tilted her head gently to one side, letting her lips part with a shaky inhale.

Another flash of light streaked overhead, drowning out the pale stars.

Lucifer’s hand on her neck pulled her closer, and then there was no more separation. Their bodies pressed into one another, and Lucifer’s hot lips connected with Gabriel’s, taking the breath right out of her. Flames ignited inside her body and her mouth parted in shock and need, scrambling her thoughts and any understanding of right and wrong. Tasting his sweeping tongue in her mouth, the entire world around them disappeared as if it had never even existed.

Gabriel reached for Lucifer, desperation growing in her at having him so close and needing so much more—

Fallen Angel: Ashes of Eden Update – Plus two free love stories

The rewrite for the first novel in my new Fallen Angel Series is done. Phew! Now I have only 4 more rewrites to go. The series release will be later this year and each book will be coming out 4-8 weeks apart!
This is a killer writing marathon—and I am killing it (in the best possible way, of course.

Now, you may or may not notice, but the book number has changed on this cover from 2 to 1. Originally, I was planning to make this novel-length prequel the second series book, meant to be read as an expansion to the novella that is already available. Since the Fallen Angel novella (Dawn of Reckoning) has more than

tripled in length with the series revision, it no longer makes sense to keep the old order. Now the books will run in chronological order and each will be novel length.

With the series order change, the re-release of Dawn of Reckoning will be happening later this year after Ashes of Eden. So make sure you scroll down and grab the free novella before its re-release. And if you’ve already read Dawn of Reckoning, I’ve set the first novel in the Blood Bound Series free today too and have included some new releases from other authors too. Happy Reading!

I Hit The Amazon Bestseller List!!!

I got an amazing surprise two days ago when I went online and saw that my psychological thriller had hit the Amazon Bestseller list. OMG!!!

Thank you all for your support with this stand-alone novel that is so very different from my regular paranormal romances. All your great feedback and awesome reviews have helped me to hit this list!

Why I write…

My journey as a writer began well before I ever considered myself a writer. As a child, I loved books. The ones that were a little twisted and scary held my attention the most, with characters in turmoil and pitted against odds that you could not imagine they would find reprieve or an escape from. It may not come as a surprise that the Goosebumps books were my favorites with all their monsters and creepy tales. But perhaps, the reason I was drawn to them might surprise you…

As a child, I suffered from night terrors. If you’ve never had them, and I hope you haven’t, let me explain. Night terrors, in my case, were a form of nightmare that would occur most nights after I went to sleep. In these nightmares that I started having from toddler age, I feared for my safety and, more often than not, my life. I would be trapped in places or hiding from monsters and even people that were after me or wanted to hurt me. Sometimes I would be running for my life from a weapon-wielding man, other times I would be hiding from a monster that had already slaughtered someone I loved. Part of what made these nightmares so traumatic was the fact that everything was so realistic. In these dreams, I had no awareness of the fact that none of it was real. For all that I experienced, it was like being trapped in an M or R-rated movie (which my parents would never allow me to watch) all the while believing it was real. Every night I ran for my life or hid while a killer skulked so close by with a deathly sharp weapon, knowing they wanted me dead, knowing that at any moment I would be their next victim.

And the worst thing was…I couldn’t wake up.

During my night terrors–which so accurately describes how I felt (terrified)–I would be screaming and crying out loud. My parents, when they were still together before separating when I was 4, would hear my distress and come to me. Each night they would try to wake me…and each night they would fail. Nothing could save me from my vivid nightmares, so all they could do was take turns to hold me and carry me as they walked up and down the hallway until I finally calmed down while asleep. I was trapped and helpless. A child with no one and nothing to protect me.

I learned from a young age that to survive I had two choices. Run or fight.

To this day, I don’t know what caused my night terrors. My horrific dreams continued throughout my childhood, lessening and returning without warning as I grew up. To this day, I still occasionally have these nightmares…but these days, I don’t cry out for help anymore. These days, I fight back and take charge. I refuse to be a victim of my mind.

And these days, all that I suffered and endured through these realistic night terrors has given me a depth to understand what it takes to survive. It has given me an experience I would never wish for, but that has shown me a side of the world that actually exists in the real world. And this insight, in changing me, I guess was one in a number of accumulative steps that lead me to take parts of my life–real or otherwise–and turn them into words on a page that tell a story of danger, trials, and through being strong, finding safety, peace, and love.

A new Year!

The new year is here and I’m back into the swing of everything. School is beginning soon and the kids will be away from 2-5 days (depending on their age :). Which is a little sad for my 3yo–or should I say for me. Finally starting kindergarten 🙁 Wow! Where did the time go?

Anyway, the show must go on, and on it goes.

I am well past the first draft for all four new books in the Fallen Angel Series. Revision has started–and so have my headaches–but, that’s all part and parcel of the process. Apparently staring down at your desk at a giant mountain of manuscripts is not great for good posture. Thank God for heat bags! And pain relief! But don’t get me wrong, I love revision. This is where I get to take all my spiffy ideas and make sure they work and deliver the characters I envisioned and story I need to get out. The process is draining but, at the same time, it is very rewarding. And knowing you will all get to read it in the coming year is really exciting!

Oh, and the cover…it’s currently in the making and I can’t wait to show you all. It’s stunning, thought-provoking, and simply beautiful.

Until next time xoxo J.L. Myers

Author Update!

I’ve seen super busy, as usual. The draft for book 3 in the Fallen Angel Series is now written. One book to go and then onto revision! This is another book marathon for me, but rather than spacing each book’s release out a year after the other, I want to bring you each new release within two months of the previous one! Crazy, I know. But if you’re anything like me, you hate waiting for the next book in a series to come out. So hopefully you will appreciate the effort when the full series comes out in 2018!!!

Other than that, I’ve been compiling the Blood Bound Series into a boxed set. Keep an eye out, because in the coming month or so it will be released. And since I love my fans, you’ll get the special release price rather than the full price 🙂 Just my way to say thanks for your support and love. But make sure you sign up for my VIP list so you don’t miss out!

Love thrillers!

Although I love watching and reading thrillers, it may or may not come as a surprise to you all that this is actually my first thriller novel to be published. This book has been percolating in the back of my mind since I first started writing the Blood Bound Series, and to do it justice I needed to wait until that series was fully finished to put my all into this book and create the different and twisted tale that would live up to all that I had imagined from the start.

This book is certainly not for the faint hearted and, if you love your endings in the ‘Happily ever after’ format, then I would suggest you wait for my next paranormal tale. However, if you love stories with characters that have trunks worth of baggage in a world where existing is do or die, then check it out. This thriller will have you covering your eyes and turning the pages faster at the same time.

Now available for pre-order at a limited new release price of $0.99. What do you have to lose…except maybe a week of pleasant dreams. Insert wicked-evil laugh mmmmwwwwahahahahahaha! Read more
